What Is V2L? How Much Power Can a BYD Supply to Your Appliances?
23 SEPTEMBER 2026
The short answer: V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) is a function that lets an electric car supply 220V household power to external appliances through an adapter plugged into the charging port. BYD vehicles deliver roughly 2,200–3,300 watts depending on the model and the adapter used. That is enough for a rice cooker, a fridge, fans, lighting and typical camping equipment, but not enough for home air conditioning or a water heater.
Are V2L and VTOL different things?
No, they are the same function under two names. V2L stands for Vehicle-to-Load and is the general industry term. VTOL is the name BYD uses in its brochures and owner manuals, usually written as VTOL Mobile Power Station. If you see both terms in your vehicle documents, they refer to the same feature.
The system converts direct current (DC) from the vehicle's high-voltage battery into 220V alternating current (AC), the same as a household socket, and delivers it through the charging port via an adapter known as the VTOL Adapter. In simple terms, it turns the entire car into a giant power bank.
How many watts can a BYD supply?
BYD models sold in Thailand supply roughly 2,200–3,300 watts. The figure you actually get depends on two things: what the vehicle supports, and what the adapter you are using supports.
• BYD ATTO 3 — up to approximately 3.3 kW
• BYD SEALION 7 — up to approximately 3.3 kW
• BYD SEAL 5 DM-i — up to approximately 2.2 kW
• BYD DOLPHIN and BYD M6 — V2L available, check the rating for your specific variant
• Other models — ask the BYD NOVA team or check your owner manual
A common misunderstanding: the vehicle itself often supports up to 3.3 kW, but the adapter supplied with some models is limited to 2.2 kW. So if a high-draw appliance will not run, the limit may not be the car at all, but the adapter. Check the rating printed on the adapter first.
What appliances can you run?
Anything whose combined draw stays below the system's maximum output. The figures below are typical ratings for common appliances.
• Phone and laptop charging, 20–100 watts — comfortable
• LED camping lights, 10–50 watts — comfortable
• Floor fan, 50–75 watts — comfortable
• Small fridge or camping cooler, 60–150 watts — comfortable
• TV or projector, 50–200 watts — comfortable
• Rice cooker, 600–900 watts — fine
• Microwave, 800–1,200 watts — fine, but run it on its own
• Electric kettle or electric pan, 1,500–2,200 watts — close to the limit, run one at a time
• Home air conditioning, water heater or washing machine, 2,000–4,500 watts — not recommended
Total draw is not the only thing to watch. Start-up surge matters too. Appliances with a motor or compressor, such as a fridge or a water pump, pull two to three times their rated power in the first moments. Avoid switching on several high-draw appliances at once, and start them one at a time.
Does V2L drain the battery quickly?
Much more slowly than most people expect, because an EV battery is hundreds of times larger than a power bank. Here are examples based on a car with roughly a 60 kWh battery.
• Cooking one pot of rice (700 watts for 40 minutes) uses about 0.5 kWh, which is under 1% of the battery
• Running a fan all night (60 watts for 8 hours) uses about 0.5 kWh, which is under 1% of the battery
• A small fridge for a full day (100 watts for 24 hours) uses about 2.4 kWh, roughly 4% of the battery
• A full night of camping uses about 4–5 kWh, roughly 7–8% of the battery
In other words, you can camp overnight and use power freely, and still have plenty of range left to drive home.
How to switch on V2L
1. Park in a dry spot, switch off the vehicle and put it in P
2. Plug the VTOL adapter into the vehicle's charging port
3. On the central screen, open the energy or power supply menu and turn on the VTOL or discharge mode
4. Set the minimum battery level at which the system stops supplying power. This can usually be set at around 15–20%, so you always keep enough range to drive home
5. Plug your appliances into the adapter
Menu locations and steps vary slightly by model and software version. If you cannot find it, ask the BYD NOVA team at any branch.
Can you power your home during a blackout?
Yes, and it is genuinely useful during the rainy season when outages are common. The correct method is to run an extension lead from the adapter and plug appliances into it directly — a fridge, fans, lighting and phone chargers, which together draw very little. A single car can keep these essentials running for several days.
One critical warning: never plug a V2L adapter into a wall socket to backfeed power into your home wiring. It is extremely dangerous for the vehicle, for your home electrical system, and for utility workers repairing lines in the area. If you want the car to power your whole house, that requires dedicated equipment installed by a licensed electrician.
Five precautions
• Avoid using it in the rain. If you must, keep every connection raised off the ground and under cover, never sitting in standing water
• Use a properly rated extension lead with sufficient current capacity, and an outdoor-rated lead if you are using it outside
• Do not switch on several high-draw appliances at once, or the system will cut power to protect itself
• Always set a minimum battery limit, especially in remote areas where charging is hard to find
• Unplug and store the adapter after every use. Do not leave it in the charging port, and keep it dry
Do DM-i plug-in hybrids have V2L?
Yes. Plug-in hybrid models such as the BYD SEAL 5 DM-i also offer V2L, rated at up to approximately 2.2 kW.
The difference is battery size. DM-i models have a far smaller battery than full electric models, so they supply power for a shorter time on battery alone. They suit short-term backup power or use during a day out, rather than continuous use over several days. For details on your specific model, ask our team or check your owner manual.
Frequently asked questions
Could V2L drain the battery so far that I cannot drive home? No. If you set a minimum battery limit, the system stops supplying power automatically once the battery falls to that level, which can be set at around 15–20%. Typical use such as cooking rice or running a fan overnight consumes under 1% of the battery each time.
I lost my V2L adapter — can I buy another? Yes. Contact a BYD NOVA service center to order a genuine part. Use a genuine or properly certified adapter with the correct current rating, as low-quality adapters can overheat and cause damage.
Can I use V2L while it is raining? Not recommended. If you must, keep every connection raised off the ground and shielded from direct water, and use an outdoor-rated extension lead.
