Blade Battery: BYD's Safest Battery Technology

The Blade Battery is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery developed in-house by BYD. Each cell is shaped like a long, thin blade and packed directly together in a cell-to-pack layout, making far more efficient use of the space inside the battery pack than a traditional module-based design.

What makes the Blade Battery stand out most is how it performs in the nail penetration test — one of the harshest safety tests in the industry, where a nail is driven straight through a cell. The Blade Battery produces no smoke and does not catch fire, unlike many other lithium battery types that tend to build up dangerous heat once a cell is punctured.

Beyond safety, the cell-to-pack structure also increases energy density within the same footprint, holds up well under high temperatures, and delivers a long service life, handling more charge-discharge cycles than a conventional lithium-ion battery under normal use.

The Blade Battery is now fitted across every BYD model sold by BYD NOVA, both fully electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (DM-i) variants — so whichever model you choose, you get the same high standard of battery safety.
