DM-i: A Leap Forward In Plug-in Hybrid Efficiency

DM-i stands for Dual Mode intelligent, BYD's plug-in hybrid system built around the electric motor as the primary driver, rather than the traditional hybrid approach of an engine assisted by a motor.

DM-i shifts between several operating modes depending on how you're driving. In the city or at low speeds, the car runs on the electric motor alone, giving the quiet, smooth feel of an EV. When the battery runs low or the car cruises at sustained higher speeds, the petrol engine kicks in — mainly to generate electricity, and occasionally to help drive the wheels directly — keeping the engine running near its most efficient range at all times.

The result is fuel consumption noticeably lower than a conventional petrol car, while keeping the everyday convenience of one: refuel at any petrol station, no dependence on charging infrastructure. You can still plug in at home to top up the battery and cover short trips in pure EV mode.

DM-i suits drivers who want the EV driving experience but still travel long distances regularly, or aren't yet confident that charging stations along their usual routes are reliable enough.
