EV Tires vs. Regular Tires: What's The Difference

EV tires and regular tires may look nearly identical, but several design details differ, driven by how electric vehicles are actually used on the road.

First is vehicle weight. EVs are generally heavier than equivalent petrol cars because of the battery pack, so EV tires need to be built to carry a higher load and resist wear over the long run.

Second is torque. Electric motors deliver maximum torque instantly from a standstill, putting more shear force through the tire's contact patch than a petrol car typically produces. Regular tires can wear faster under this kind of load, which is why EV-specific tires often use reinforced compounds for extra durability.

Third is noise and rolling resistance. Without engine noise to mask tire sound, manufacturers design EV tire treads specifically to run quieter, while also targeting low rolling resistance to help extend range per charge.

For upkeep, check tire pressure regularly and rotate your tires according to the interval in your owner's manual, so they wear evenly and stay safe to drive on.
